Admitted to the Union: June 15, 1836. The 25th state admitted to the Union 'along with' Michigan.

Pronounction: "AR-kan-saw" (In 1881 the state legislature choose this to honor the state's Native American roots. The name derives from the French pronunciation the Algonquian-speaking people used to referrer to the Quapaw as 'akansa' meaning "south wind" or "downriver people.") (1)

Nickname: Bear State/Toothpick State/Rackensack, Wonder State, The Land of Opportunity, The Natural State (2)

Mammal: White-tailed deer. The white-tailed deer was designated the official mammal of Arkansas following House Bill 2110 in 1993. (3)
