The 25th state admitted to the Union 'along with' Michigan. Pronounction: "AR-kan-saw" (In 1881 the state legislature choose this to honor the state's Native American roots. The name derives from the French pronunciation the Algonquian-speaking people used to referrer to the Quapaw as 'akansa' meaning "south wind" or "downriver people.")
